Sarah is very excited to announce her new exhibition ‘Dubbelleven’ (Double Life) at Museum Arnhem, her first major solo exhibition in the Netherlands.
The exhibition features paintings, photographs, videos, neon works, and collages created by Maple between 2006 and the present. In these works, she explores cultural identity, religion, and gender. As a woman with an Islamic and South Asian background, she raises questions about cultural and religious rules, but also about Western ideas regarding freedom and emancipation. Inequality between women and men, both in the art world and in society, plays a significant role throughout her oeuvre. In her more recent work, she also focuses on the role of mothers, which she believes is often underestimated. Maple combines her own experiences with societal issues. Through her humorous visual language, she breaks taboos and does not shy away from controversy.
Her art makes you think about faith, gender, and identity, and what it is like to grow up between two cultures and religions. Dubbelleven invites you to talk, reflect, and find recognition. Sarah Maple shows how art can be simultaneously personal and political, and how powerful that combination can be.
